Workout Club

People who live with mental illness are at higher risk for heart disease, metabolic syndrome, Type 2 diabetes and a host of other illnesses.

Our first steps at last year's National Convention to make health and wellness an integral part of the convention program were very popular. This year we've expanded those activities to tie in with the Hearts & Minds program.

We will offer information on medications and side effects, weight management, good dental hygiene, nutrition, smoking cessation, warning signs for diabetes and tips for establishing a healthier lifestyle.

Classes and other activities will include early morning walks around the Washington Hilton (led by a NAMIWalks team), yoga, exercise, sing-alongs and more!

Purchase the Hearts & Minds: A Roadmap to Wellness for Individuals Living with Mental Illness at the NAMI bookstore.

Employment offers a person living with mental illness much more than a paycheck: It provides self-esteem, an opportunity to establish and meet responsibilities and goals, a way to structure daily living and a pathway to professional and personal relationships.

The International Center for Clubhouse Development (ICCD), founded on the belief that recovery from serious mental illness must involve the whole person in a vital and culturally sensitive community, has long recognized the integral role of employment in recovery.

In a special symposium on employment, two of ICCD's leading lights—Jack Yatsko and Joel Corcoran— will share the philosophy behind ICCD's vocational rehabilitation programs, which are among the most successful in today's community mental health systems.

Also featured will be a first-person account of the dramatic impact of employment on recovery.
