NAMI Albany is a non profit organization established in 2007.  We are an affiliate of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and NAMI Georgia.

Mission Statement    

To assist those touched by mental illness and their families in coping with mental illness.  Through education, support groups, public outreach to fight stigma, and political advocacy with state and national resources, Nami Albany works to improve the quality of life for persons of all ages who are affect by mental illnesses. 

Meet Our Officers:

President:   Jere Brands

Jere Brands recently moved back to Albany, her home town after spending 40 years in Iowa. Before retiring in 2002, she taught special education and German in a public high school.  From 1988-2002 she also coordinated a school partnership with a German secondary school.  She was a member of NAMI in Iowa and has taught the Family to Family course both there and in Albany. Jere has a family member with a mental illness. 

Vice President/Treasurer:   Alan White

Alan White was born and raised in Owego, NY.  He attended the NY Institute of Arts and Sciences, Binghamton University and Seton Hall University.  Alan served three years  in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He retired in Albany after working 34 years at Merck as a Chemist and a Quality Control Manager.  Alan has been married for 50 years to wife Jean and they has two daughters, Holly and Elaine.  He was instrumental in forming the Albany affiliate and served as President and Treasurer until this year.  Alan is also an avid camera enthusiast. Alan also has a family member with a mental illness.

Secretary:   Pam Barfield

Pam was born in Dawson, Georgia and grew up in Parrott and Pleasant Hill communities.  She graduated from Terrell Academy in 1979 and married Larry Barfield in 1980.  They have 3 daughters, 2 grandsons and a granddaughter.  Pam was employed with the State of Georgia for 24 years.  Her hobbies are reading, volunteering with NAMI, and spending time with her family.  Pam serves as a facilitator of the Family Support Group and is an instructor in the Family to Family educational program. Pam is a family member of someone with a mental illness.
