Guide for Getting Help when you have a Mental Illness

 

Documents needed: Birth Certificate

Social Security Card

Picture ID (get from DMV)

 

Transportation: Bus System (Bus Routes can be obtained from the

Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland St), The transit system

operates Monday through Saturday, from 6:00 a.m. to

10:00 p.m., from Memorial Day to Labor Day and operates

Monday through Saturday, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

September through May.

Low cost fee, all day passes available.

 

 

Social Services Food Stamps and Medicaid

Go to the office located in the area where you live

To apply for food stamps only an appointment is necessary.

Medicaid and Food Stamps can be applied for at the same time.

To apply for SSI or SSDI an appointment is necessary.

 

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program

to provide income to the disabled population. Eligibility is

based on financial need and disability determination.

 

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is for workers

With disabilities who have paid into the Social Security

system through payroll deductions. Some individuals

under age 22 with disabilities may collect SSDI under a

parents account if the parent is retired, disabled, or

deceased.

 

A Representative Payee is a family member, friend, or

Community advocate who receives a monthly SSI or SSDI

check on behalf of the person diagnosed with a mental

illness and helps him or her manage the money.

For mental health clients; crisis services 24 hours per day , 7 days a week, psychiatric and psychological evaluations; and medication. No one is denied services based on their

Ability to pay; sliding scale is offered. Insurances are accepted.

 

Angel Food Ministries

Provides food once a month. Orders need to be placed

in advance. Food stamps are accepted if arranged ahead

of time.

 

Fish

Services: Provides emergency food, clothing, and some

transportation for medical care. Proof must be shown that

the client is in need of transportation. Available Monday

through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

 

Grove Christian Outreach Center

Service Area: Grove, Busch Gardens-Lee Hall. Proof

of residency required.

 

Services: Food distribution, and clothes closet. Call ahead

to get distribution times.

Services: Free emergency food assistance. Proof of

Identification that confirms address or a piece of mail with

Name and address must be provided. Hours are: Monday

Wednesday, and Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

 

St. Bedes Catholic Church Social Ministry

Services: Provide emergency non-perishable food

Open Monday and Wednesday 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Center for Independent Living

Services: Helps people with disabilities to become in-

dependent, set goals, make good decisions, budgeting self

advocacy, assist with employment opportunities, assists

with applying for benefits; provides individual and group

counseling such as helping clients cope with having a

disability; independent living skills; time management and

decision making skills.

 

 

Community Action Agency

Services: Legal Outreach Program meets quarterly where

attorneys come probono to talk with clients, and

emergency housing

 

 

Salvation Army

Service Area: James City County, Williamsburg, the

Bruton District of York County.

Fee: None

 

Services: Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.

Until 5:00 p.m. Assistance with emergency food, rent,

some medication costs, transportation, clothing and house-

hold items. Counseling offered to prevent reoccurrence..

Referrals to other agencies to help connect with other

community resources. Must be income eligible and

provide verification of income. Life skills classes. Some very limited housing available. Additionally, there is a male Substance Abuse Recovery Housing Program thru

collaboration with HTSA.

 

United Way of Greater Williamsburg

Service Area: James City County, Williamsburg, the

Bruton District of York County and surrounding areas.

Fee: None

 

Services: Community resource service and a help/crisis line. Provides referrals to other organizations and agencies for those needing assistance with mental health services, medication, utility assistance, homelessness food, clothing, transportation.

For 90 days. If working 50% of income from job is for

Saving, 20% for programs. If looking for a job no cost.

Services include: a job bank, individualized job search

Assistance, customized assistance for those with

Rita Welsh Adult Literacy Center

College of William and Mary, Williamsburg

Service Area: James City County, Williamsburg, Upper

York County

Services: Provides free basic education to adults who have

not graduated from High school. Offered to anyone who is 18 years old or older.

Service area: Those who are residents of or working in the

Counties list above.
