2015 NAMI NORTHWEST WALK

Sign up now for the 2015 NAMI Northwest Walk, presented by Providence Health & Services! Join us for the largest mental health event in Oregon on Sunday, May 17. Raising awarness and funds helps us keep NAMI programs and services free of charge for those who need them.

Last year, 4,000 people joined us and 3,000 walked to make a statement that mental health matters. Let's make this year even bigger! This 5K walk will be held at the Eastbank Esplanade (corner of SE Water and SE Main) in Portland. Registration begins at noon, and the walk begins at 1 pm. Click here for a complete FAQ about the walk. Click here to see the walk route map. For more walk details, and to register, visit www.namiwalks.org/northwest.

Please be aware that the Rock N Roll Half Marathon will be held in Portland on the morning of walk day and will affect local roads and traffic. For a complete list of road closures, click here.

Questions? Contact Walk Manager Michelle Madison at (503) 230-8009 or michelle@namior.org.

NAMI Advocacy Training

Interested in training to be an advocate for improved mental health services in Oregon? NAMI Oregon will conduct a NAMI Smarts for Advocacy training Saturday April 25, 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm at Providence Portland Medical Center, Room HCC3 (basement level), located at 4805 NE Glisan St., Portland, OR 97213.

NAMI Smarts for Advocacy is a hands-on advocacy training program that helps people living with mental illness, friends and family transform their passion and lived experience into skillful grassroots advocacy. Participants will be coached in crafting a succinct version of their personal story that can be used to advocate for improved policies. Each participant will leave the training prepared to discuss their experience with the mental healthcare system in a way that is compelling with legislators and other policymakers.

Space is limited. If you are interested in attending, please email (pete@namior.org) or call (503-230-8009) Peter Link to provide the following information:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Phone number
Also please indicate whether you are a person living with mental illness, a family member of a person living with mental illness, or both.

Action Alert: Urge legislators to support our housing bill

Help us get more mental health housing built in Oregon! Our housing bill, House Bill 2825, would create a housing development incentive fund for new mental health housing around the state. The House Health Care Committee held a hearing for the bill on Friday, Feb. 20. Please contact the committee and urge members to support this important legislation, and contact your local legislators and ask for their support of HB 2825 as well. For more information about the bill, click here.

About NAMI Oregon

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Oregon (NAMI Oregon) is a statewide grassroots organization with more than 1,700 members in 14 affiliates; it is one of 50 state organizations that comprise the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Our mission is to improve the quality of life of individuals living with mental illness and their families and loved ones through education, support, and advocacy. See a list of our current education courses and support groups around Oregon.

NAMI Oregon's affiliates, which rely on the support of dedicated volunteers, are vital to providing programs and services locally to let you know you are not alone. NAMI Oregon also works to ensure that everyone affected by mental illness is represented wherever decisions are made. NAMI Oregon testifies before the state legislature, serves on state planning and advisory committees, actively partners with strategic coalitions, and participates in task forces and other policy forums.
