An ombudsman is a person who acts as a trusted intermediary between an organization and some external constituency while representing the broad scope of constituent interests.
The origin of the word is found in Old Swedish (umbuðsmann) and the words umbuds man, meaning representative.

The Lake County Mental Health Ombudsman Program

If you are an individual or a family member of an individual receiving mental health services in Lake County, and you are in need of help, we offer the services of an Ombudsman.

The Lake County Mental Health Ombudsman Program is designed to provide advocacy services for individuals affected by mental illness (including co-occurring disorders) that are consumer and family friendly while encouraging persons with mental illness and their family members to develop skills and strategies for constructive advocacy and decision-making on their own behalf.

The Mental Health Ombudsman Program is dedicated to the NAMI mission of working to improve the quality of life for all who are affected by mental illness.

General services:

  • Listens to concerns or complaints and assists in finding a solution.
  • Helps clients and family members “get through the system,” especially when they are receiving services from more than one agency.
  • Encourages and works with callers to develop skills and strategies for constructive advocacy and decision-making on their own behalf.
  • Coaches and teaches callers how best to work with service providers.
  • Helps to identify gaps in services for individuals with mental illness, including co-occurring disorders and advocate for improvements.

The Mental Health Ombudsman Program functions independently and is not subjected to undue influences by any party in the completion of its duties.  Therefore, feel free to contact the Ombudsman if you have

  • A need for information concerning services for people with mental illness or substance abuse.
  • A concern or complaint about services.
  • A question about rights.
  • A grievance.
  • Difficulty accessing appropriate services.
  • An idea for making services better.

The Ombudsman will assist clients in resolving their concerns by working with agency staff where the client receives services. All contacts are confidential, unless permission is given otherwise.  All callers will receive a response within one business day.
