NAMI offers outstanding peer-directed programs in education and support.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Central Susquehanna Valley (NAMI-CSV) plans to offer its free Family-to-Family educational program to help family members
who have a relative recovering from mental illness. The free12-session program is for adults who have a family member coping with a serious mental illness.
The internationally acclaimed, evidence-based course is designed and written by experienced family members/mental health professionals and is taught by trained family members
who have lived with mental illness in their family. All course materials are furnished at no cost to participants. Sessions focus on several serious psychiatric disorders such as:
Bipolar, Clinical Depression, Obsessive Compulsive, Anxiety & Panic, Schizophrenia & Schizoaffective, Borderline Personality, PTSD and Co-occurring Brain and Addictive Disorders.
Families receive up-to-date information on medication and research, guidance on locating appropriate services and supports within their community, and acquire strategies for handling
crisis and relapses. Graduates of the course attest to gaining a greater understanding of mental illness, coping much better, worrying less, and feeling newly empowered
to advocate for better treatment and services for their relatives. The course is designed for adult family members and significant others of individuals with these brain disorders,
rather than the individuals themselves.
