People Acting Together With Hope

What Is Mental Illness?
Serious brain disorders such as schizophrenia, manic depression, major depression, and
obsessive-compulsive disorder strike one in five people at some point in their lives. These
disorders are biological in origin, often have a genetic component, and, thanks to the
dedication of researchers, we are learning more about them every day. The good news
is that they are highly treatable through a combination of medication, support, and
rehabilitation. The bad news is that many people remain ignorant about brain disorders
and do not have access to needed services.

What Is Our Mission?
Founded in 1980 by three families with a mentally ill family member, NAMI Queens/Nassau
(formerly AMI/PATH) has grown to be the second largest of more than seventy NAMI
chapters in New York State. We are a grassroots organization dedicated to improving the
lives of people with severe mental illness and their families.

What Are Our Goals?
Change public attitudes about mental illness
• Provide mutual support
• Exchange information
• Expand research
• Improve access to housing
• Develop and increase services
• Assure access to care
• Advocate for legislation to support our goals
