Teen Advisory Group Update on Activities
April 23, 2004
NAMI’s Work Group 1 - Combating Stigma UPDATE
Teens in this group are presently working on PowerPoint presentations to exhibit and talk at their local community colleges and high schools. They all have asked permission already and presentations should be taking place throughout May and June 2004. Topics of presentations constitute specific mental illnesses and disorders including Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar, ADHD, Suicide and eating disorders. The group is also gathering and sharing thoughts for the development of 10 strong anti stigma messages for campaign. They are collecting relevant statistics related to teens with mental illnesses and documenting all famous people living with mental illnesses.
NAMI’s Work Group 2 - Developing an Online Community & Resources UPDATE
Teens in this group have already developed a message board for our day to day communications and a Teen NAMI web site (with possibilities of discussion groups). Posting in teen web site include Personal stories, Recommended books and resources for teens, Updates in mental health, Basic definitions for teen most common disorders, Links to other useful teen web sites and other resources, Newspapers and magazines teen related articles, and Information about things going on for teens within their communities (calendar of events for teens).
In addition, members of this group ambition and expect to create anytime soon a teens e-newsletter. Teens have decided that the difference between the newsletter and the web site will be that the e-newsletter will be primarily devoted to personal stories and updates on mental health (breakthroughts). On the other hand, the web site will still include these as well; but it will also offer the possibility of posting questions and answers on a message board (functioning as discussion groups) - giving teens advice from professionals and parents and other products and services.
NAMI’s Work Group 3 - Developing Resources UPDATE
Teens in this group are working on a brochure development. Such brochure will include brief descriptions of the following most common teen’s disorders (Anxiety Disorders, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders, Depression, OCD, and Schizophrenia), a section on ways to deal with mental illnesses, and a section filled with personal stories. These teens are also working on a short 5-minute video with personal stories and pictures of teens with mental illness. The video will be available online at group #2’s web site. Teens will be able to download video from web site through a link.
