President Bush has called on Congress to pass legislation in support of mental health parity. The President made the announcement while speaking at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

NAMI is very hopeful that the President's support will pave the way for final congressional action on a meaningful national parity law that will -- once and for all -- end discrimination against people with mental illnes and their families. We look forward to working with President Bush to ensure that treatment for mental illness is covered on the same terms and conditions as all other diseases.

NAMI praises Senators Pete Domenici (R-NM) and Paul Wellstone (D-MN) and Representatives Marge Roukema (R-NJ) and Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) and the many Senate and House cosponsors of parity legislation for their tireless efforts to win final passage of a parity law.
