Summer Legal Information Session Series
NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore will present the Summer Legal Series of information sessions. The Summer Legal Series will provide resources, information, and tools to navigate legal issues related to mental health and disability. All information sessions are free and open to the public.
Navigating the Decision Making Process - Health Care and Otherwise

This presentation will look at navigating the decision-making process with health care, focusing upon advanced medical directives and will also touch on the array of decison-making options, such as guardianship.
About the Presenter: Sharon Krevor-Weisbaum, a former Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, works with Brown, Goldstein, & Levy. She represents individuals with disabilities and their families who require services or support from state or federal government and those who require accomodations from employers or service providers.
Overview of the Law on Involuntary Commitment
This presentation will cover an overview of the law on involuntary commitments, from the emergency petition stage all the way through to the hearing process. No personal legal questions will be answered nor personal legal advice given.

Social Security Disability/Supplemental Security Income Disability

This presentation will discuss disability benefits for people living with serious mental illness, including social security disability and supplemental security income disability.
About the Presenter: Sharon A. Christie, of Sharon Christie Law, is an attorney and a nurse. She is an advocate for people who can no longer work because of an illness or injury but are too young to retire. Sharon worked as a nurse in both acute and long-term care settings prior to practicing law.
Estate and Legal Planning Issues Related to Disability
Wednesday, August 19th 7-9pm
This presentation will discuss estate planning issues, touching on benefits eligibility, and families planning for people with disabilities, including Advanced Medical Directives.
About the Presenter: Mary O'Byrne, of Frank, Frank & Scherr, LLC, concentrates on special needs and estate planning. She teaches at the Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers and other state and national educational forums. She additionally serves on the NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore board of directors.
