National Alliance on Mental Illness

Dear Friends of the El Paso Community:

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.  NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, supports and research and is steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness and building a community of hope for all of those in need.

It is important to be aware of the diverse programs offered at no charge by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, El Paso Affiliate (NAMI El Paso).  We joined the board last summer and have been profoundly impressed with all that NAMI El Paso offers.  The “new and improved” NAMI has so much for so many that we wanted to be certain to get the information out to the families of loved ones affected by mental illness, to people living with mental illness, to all practitioners for referral purposes, and to our community at large.

We encourage you to browse through the NAMI El Paso website at to learned about our Signature Programs and join us at one or more of the classes and events being planned on a regular basis.  Currently, we are offering  ‘free of charge’ classes in English and Spanish, such as  Family-to-Family” and “Basics.”  Community Forums and Health Fairs are regularly scheduled to help El Pasoans learn about ways in which they can help eliminate the stigma on mental illness and get involved if they so wish.   In addition, presentations that unmask mental illness using speaker stories to illustrate the individual realities of living with mental illness and their courageous journey towards recovery,  can be scheduled by calling the NAMI El Paso office.  These presentations are made possible through a unique NAMI Signature program called “In Our Own Voice.”   These programs are possible through the partnership between NAMI El Paso & Paso del Norte Health Foundation, and with the support of Family Services of El Paso.

The Family Support Group and the Peer Support Group are offered in English on Mondays 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at El Paso Behavioral Health, at 1900 Denver Avenue.  The Grupo de Apoyo para Familias meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at St. Pius Parish in the Mother Theresa room.  These groups are made possible through the partnership between NAMI El Pas El Paso Behavioral Health for English and St. Pius Church for Spanish.

It is our hope that each of you will find the NAMI El Paso information beneficial for yourself, your loved ones, for those to whom you provide services, as well as for the awareness of your friends, co-workers and colleagues. We look forward to your involvement.
