National Alliance on Mental Illness

NAMI - National Alliance for Mental Illness is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses

and to the improvement of the quality of life for all whose lives are affected by these diseases.

NAMI-Rome established in the 1980's by a tireless and very small group who sought to improve the lives of their loved ones.  They would meet and comfort each other.  Many times only three attended the meetings.  Never giving up on their loved ones, this small group became advocates and expressed their concern when situations arose.  Others heard their voices and joined the effort.  In the late 1990's two became trained to facilitate the Family-To-Family education course.  From this and subsequent classes came additional interested family members who wanted to join the movement.

Meetings have been held in various locations, primarily churches.

NAMI-Rome is one of the more active NAMI affiliates in Georgia.  Typically, over 30 individuals with mental illness and family members attend its monthly meetings.  We have members and visitors from Bartow, Chattooga, Floyd, Gordon, Polk, and other nearby counties.  NAMI-Rome is incorporated in the state of Georgia and is a 501(c)3 charity.

NAMI-Rome strives to serve its members and the larger community by providing education and support through free courses and support groups.  Additionally, members are involved in raising public awareness about mental illness.

Mission Statement

NAMI recognizes that the key concepts of recovery, resiliency and support are essential to improving the wellness and quality of life of all persons affected by mental illness. Mental illnesses should not be an obstacle to a full and meaningful life for persons who live with them.  NAMI will advocate at all levels to ensure that all persons affected by mental illness receive the services that they need and deserve, in a timely fashion.

NAMI Rome provides support, education, and advocacy throughout northwest Georgia on behalf of individuals and families affected by mental illness.
