Congress Begins August Recess -- Final Action Includes House Passage of AHP Legislation, Senate Action on Spending Bills of Mental Illness Research & Services, Housing & Veterans
July 29, 2005
Today Congress began a month-long summer recess after a flurry of legislative activity that included action on Association Health Plan (AHP) legislation by the House and movement by the Senate on spending legislation covering the budgets of NIMH, SAMHSA, HUD and the VA. When Congress returns in September, a major focus will be action budget "reconciliation" legislation that will include proposed reductions to the Medicaid program. Next week NAMI will be forwarding an alert outlining efforts to press members of Congress on ensuring that any changes to Medicaid do not disproportionately impact beneficiaries with mental illness.
In the final weeks prior to the August recess, both the House and Senate moved forward on important bills impacting people with mental illness and their families. Included below are links to summaries of these legislative actions:Senate Appropriations Committee action on spending legislation for veterans' programs
