New Freedom Commission Report: A Multicultural Perspective Forum
|The exhaustive report from President Bush's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health emphasizes the need to transform our nation's mental health system. Achieving the Promise: Transforming Mental Health Care in America, also provides recommendations for steps that can be taken at national, state and local levels to improve mental health services and supports for people of all ages with mental illnesses. Not surprisingly, the report acknowledges disparities in the quality of care received by people of color and calls for the elimination of these disparities.
NAMI's Multicultural Action Center together with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and the Latino Behavioral Health Institute organized the New Freedom Commission Report: A Multicultural Perspective Forum to discuss the report from a multicultural perspective. This event took place at the Universal Hilton & Towers in Universal City, CA on Wednesday June 2nd, 2004. This one-day event brought together Commissioner Steve Mayberg, Ph.D. (Director of the California Department of Mental Health) and leaders from communities of color to hold an open dialogue about the implications of the Report for these communities and to provide possible recommendations and policy implementation strategies from a multicultural viewpoint.
Leaders from the African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Latino communities, worked together to put forward policy recommendations.
