Recovery for All: December 2009

As we enter the holiday season and near the close of another year, the NAMI Multicultural Action Center wishes to reflect on this past year and to acknowledge and thank our newsletter subscribers for your continued interest and support of our efforts. We are thankful to count many of you as our colleagues and partners in the field and look forward to our continued partnership to ensure progress toward eliminating mental health disparities, increasing access to quality care and support and making recovery a reality for all.

Depression Podcast Series Features New Episodes with Latino and Asian American Populations Focus

As a member of the Depression is Real Coalition, formed in 2006, NAMI works to provide important public education around the true nature of depression, and the important message of hope of recovery. The coalition’s podcast series, The Down & Up Show, features individuals living with the illness and other experts on depression in short recordings accessible through the coalition's Web site. NAMI was proud to contribute culture-specific considerations to this collection with two new episodes in November about depression among Latino and Asian American communities:

American Indian and Alaska Native Mental Health Webinar Resources

Presentation materials from the NAMI-IHS Native American Heritage Month Webinar on American Indian and Alaska Native Mental Health are now available on the NAMI Web site, including PowerPoint slides from presenters Jimi Kelley and Rose Weahkee, Ph.D. as well as links to further information about the “Empowering Our Spirits” youth suicide prevention initiative, discussed by John Walkup, M.D. and Allison Barlow, M.A., M.P.H. of the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health.

La mano amiga (The Helping Hand)

La mano amiga is a free monthly Spanish-language magazine that features original articles with information and advice for recent Latino immigrants. The publication covers a range of issues including mental health and wellness with culturally competent toll-free phone numbers and links to Spanish-language websites, empowering readers to seek further information.
