This past week the House Financial Services Committee approved separate bills reforming the HUD Section 811 Program (HR 5772) and the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (HR 840).
Support Reauthorization of Critical Homeless Programs
This week the House Financial Services Committee will take up legislation reauthorizing programs under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. This includes a range of critical resources that meet the needs of individuals with serious mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse disorders that experience chronic homelessness.
Why is the Housing Trust Fund Important for NAMI?
The Housing Trust Fund is the first new federal housing production program since the HOME program was created in 1990 and the first new production program specifically targeted to extremely low income households since the Section 8 program was created in 1974.
Congress Approves Housing Trust Fund!
As is being widely reported in the press, Congress has sent to the President a massive housing package that includes legislation designed to prevent mortgage foreclosures, reform Federal Housing Administration and shore up the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Included in the bill are a number of critical provisions to foster development of rental housing serving individuals with extremely low incomes, chief among them a new Housing Trust Fund.

Senate Appropriations Committee Clears FY 2007 HUD Budget
On July 20, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed legislation funding the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for FY 2007. The legislation, known as the Treasury-Transportation-HUD Appropriations bill (HR 5576), includes a total of $36 billion for HUD for FY 2007, $1.2 billion above the President's request.
