NAMI Members Urged to Contact Federal Representatives to Bring Family Opportunity Act to the Floor
There are indications that Speaker Hastert will soon bring the FOA to the House Floor for a vote. This is an unprecedented opportunity – there has been great difficulty in bringing this important bill to this point in the past. NAMI urges advocates to act now to help ensure that this bill receives proper attention.
Family Opportunity Act (FOA) -- FOA is legislation designed to allow families with children with serious disabilities and incomes up to 250% of the federal poverty level -- to buy into the Medicaid program and requires cost sharing on a sliding scale. It is optional for states to participate.
Please contact your House representatives and urge them to ask the Speaker of the House -- Dennis Hastert (R-IL) and the House Majority Leader -- Tom DeLay (R-TX) to bring FOA to the House floor for a vote. Also, please contact your Senators and urge them to ask the Senator Majority Leader Senator Frist (R-TN) to bring FOA to the Senate floor for a vote.
All Senators can be reached by calling the Capitol Switchboard toll free at 1-800-839-5276 or at 202-224-3121 or online through www.congress.org.
