NAMI National Board of Directors

Gloria Walker

Gloria Walker is a member on the NAMI Board of Directors and executive director at NAMI Urban Greater Cincinnati Network on Mental Illness in Cincinnati.

Mrs. Walker is the mother of an adult living with bipolar disorder. She advocates at the state, local and individual levels for proper treatment and supports for her loved one and all people living with serious mental illness.

Mrs. Walker came to NAMI because it was the only help she could find after one of her son’s hospitalizations more than 21 years ago. She has been active in NAMI ever since.

She has been a leader in NAMI for many years and has learned that her most important advocacy priority is funding. Without appropriate funding, there is no voice to speak for policies and laws that impact adequate, appropriate and proper treatment, services and research that enable individuals living with mental illness to successfully recover and live in their communities.

Mrs. Walker has just completed serving her second term as president of NAMI Ohio. She is a past board member of NAMI, having served two terms starting in 2000, where she felt it her responsibility to encourage and support other NAMI Affiliate leaders to take on a leadership role and become candidates. She has served on the board of NAMI Hamilton County, and she is now executive director for NAMI Urban Greater Cincinnati Network on Mental Illness, which she co-founded.

She is proud of her efforts in development of the NAMI Multicultural Action Center and encouraging all of NAMI’s efforts at diversity and inclusion. She is pleased with her work with the Veteran’s Council and her work on the NAMI Convention Committee.

Mrs. Walker earned her M.B.A. in business at Xavier University and B.S. in economics at University of Cincinnati. She is a member of Ohio Mental Health Planning Council and a board member of Ohio PAIMI Council and Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health.
