Custody Relinquishment Story Bank

Bipartisan federal legislation, the Keeping Families Together Act (S. 380/H.R. 823), has been introduced that promises to address the scandal that has lingered too long in states throughout the nation--parents being forced to give up custody of their children solely to secure vitally necessary mental health treatment.

The media, legislative staff and others often contact NAMI and other advocacy groups and request family stories related to custody relinquishment. For that reason, we are creating this story bank and also in support of our advocacy efforts on the Keeping Families Together Act. This also allows us to show legislators and policymakers the magnitude of this practice and the incredible toll that it takes on families.

To be included in the story bank, click here and provide the requested information.

We greatly appreciate the opportunity to review your story. We cannot guarantee that your story will be used, however we assure you that names will remain confidential unless we contact you first for authorization to use your name and story. We need your name and contact information to contact you if we receive a request for family stories. We may use data in the aggregate, without identifying your family name or story, to show the prevalence and magnitude of this problem.
