Evidence-Based Practices in Child Mental Health

Barbara Burns, Ph.D., is a national leading expert on children's evidence-based practices and Director of the Services Effectiveness Research Program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Duke University School of Medicine.

Dr. Burns provided a general overview of what is in and what is out in regards to evidence-based practices; treatments that have been shown to be effective in treating child and adolescent mental illnesses. She also discussed how families can advocate for more effective practices in their communities. She offered her expertise in the field and was a valuable resource for NAMI National's family guide on Choosing the Right Treatment: What Families Need to Know about Evidence-Based Practices.

Psychoeducational Psychotherapy: A Model for Childhood Interventions?

Dr. Mary Fristad, Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Ohio State University, discussed psychoeducational psychotherapy as an effective treatment to help children and adolescents who are living with bipolar disorder.

During her presentation, Dr. Fristad mentioned a report on Facial Expression Recognition in Adolescents with Mood and Anxiety Disorders, by Ellen Leibenluft et al., which concluded that adolescents with bipolar disorder misinterpret facial expressions as being angry.

Dr. Mary Fristad coauthored a book for families titled, Raising a Moody Child: How to Cope with Depression and Bipolar Disorder. She also has an online interview, Beyond the Book, Bipolar Children and Their Families, which explores issues relevant to children with bipolar disorder and their families.
