Turning Frustration into Action: Fighting for Crisis Services in Your Community

Many individuals and families don’t know where to turn when a crisis occurs. NAMI members and local leaders want to be better equipped to understand the kinds of crisis services that may be needed in their states and communities. Fortunately, some states have promising developments in crisis services.

For example, in 2007, Texas invested $81 million in crisis mental health services, creating a statewide system of crisis services to serve people living with mental illness. This investment and a commitment by the legislature to continue to support crisis services was made possible by a coalition of community based organizations, including sheriffs, judges, county leaders and mental health advocates.

Another hopeful story can be found in Virginia.  Virginia has implemented crisis assessment centers paired with crisis intervention teams (CIT) in a number of communities statewide.  The crisis assessment center provides an alternative to the emergency room, creating a safe, calm environment for people in crisis to get an assessment and get connected to services.

Build Services in Your Community

It is important for individuals and families to learn how to advocate with legislators and community leaders for crisis intervention teams (CIT), crisis assessment centers, peer support and other services that are vital in a crisis. Experts from Texas and Virginia will help you develop those skills at a special presentation scheduled for at the NAMI National Convention.
