Extra Cash Payments for SSI and SSDI Beneficiaries Expected in May

April 29, 2009

In May, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be mailing every Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), veterans’ disability beneficiary an extra one-time payment of $250.  This payment will be mailed separately from each beneficiary’s May 2009 monthly check.

For beneficiaries whose cash benefits are administered through a Representative Payee, the Representative Payee will receive the check on the beneficiary’s behalf.  It is important to note that this extra check will:

  • NOT count as income for tax purposes, and
  • NOT count as a resource for purposes of SSI or Medicaid eligibility IF it is spent within 9 months of receipt – by the end of February 2010.

Given the volume of extra payments being sent out, SSA is expected to most of the month of May to get the checks distributed.  SSA expects all of the extra payments to be disbursed by June 4. More information on the extra SSI and SSDI payment is available on the Social Security Administration website, here and here.
