Parity Bill Introduced in the House

March 19, 2007

On March 9, Representatives Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN) introduced legislation in the House to require insurance parity. Under the proposed legislation, health plans would have to cover mental illness and substance abuse disorders on equal terms with other conditions.  The Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act (HR 1424) is the House companion to legislation (S 558) that was reported by the Senate Health Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee on February 14.
