NAMI Honors College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists with Award

July 26, 2006

Arlington, VA — The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has honored the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) with its Excellence in Community Mental Health Services Award in recognition of their outstanding efforts to educate people about the available medications for the treatment of mental illness.

"One of the keys to successful treatment for mental illness is arming patients with education about their disease and the treatments available to them.  The College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists has made an extraordinary commitment and contribution to public education about medication used to treat serious mental illness," said NAMI executive director Michael J. Fitzpatrick.

The CPNP has worked in partnership with NAMI over several years to inform and educate people about the medications available to treat mental illness.  They help to prepare and update information distributed through NAMI’s HelpLine and Web site, and provide a very popular and valuable “Ask the Pharmacist” booth at NAMI’s annual convention.

Accepting the award at NAMI’s most recent convention on June 30th were CPNP Past President Charlie Caley, President Matthew Fuller, and CPNP Member Gene Makela.

"CPNP and NAMI continue to explore ways to cooperatively provide additional services to consumers and their families," Dr. Fuller said in his acceptance remarks.

With more than 1100 state and local affiliates, NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illness.
