NAMI Salutes Heroes in the House and Senate Debates on SCHIP-Medicare Legislation

August 6, 2007

NAMI would like to recognize the following members of Congress for their leadership in crafting the current SCHIP bills that passed both the House and Senate last week.  Advocates living in their states and districts are strongly encouraged to thank these members of Congress of their efforts on behalf of children and adults living with mental illness.

  • Strengthening SCHIP - For leadership in bringing the House and Senate SCHIP bills forward:  Representatives John Dingell (D-MI), Charles Rangel (D-NY), Pete Stark (D-CA) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Senators Max Baucus (D-MT), Charles Grassley (R-IA), Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT).
  • SCHIP Parity - For ensuring that both HR 3162 and S 1893 include new requirements for private sector SCHIP plans to cover treatment for mental illness just like all other diseases and conditions (i.e., at parity):  Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Representative Tammy Baldwin (D-WI).
  • Medicare - For leadership in including in HR 3162 critical changes to Medicare program including parity for outpatient mental health services as well as improvements to the Medicare Part D drug benefit:  Representatives Pete Stark (D-CA) and Lloyd Doggett (D-TX).
  • Medicaid - For pressing to stop planned Medicaid regulations designed to limit community-based mental health services under the Rehabilitation Option:  Representative John Dingell (D-MI) and Senators Ken Salazar (D-CO) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA).
