Support Effort to Protect Funding for Mental Illness Research and Services and Housing Programs

June 15, 2012

This coming January, funding for mental illness research and services, as well as housing programs are at risk of being subject to an across-the-board cut of as much as 8.4 percent. This “sequester” was put in place last year as part of the Budget Control Act. These critical federal investments in mental illness research, services, housing programs are all part of the “non-defense discretionary” or NDD part of the federal budget. Congress and the Obama Administration have already agreed—as part of the Budget Control Act—to impose strict limit on all NDD programs over the coming decade, resulting in savings of more than $900 billion through 2021. It is simply unfair to impose an additional 8.4 percent across-the-board reduction in 2013 through a “sequester.”

NAMI has joined a broad coalition of organizations that is working to prevent additional deep cuts to non-defense discretionary spending in 2013 and beyond. As part of this effort, NAMI has signed on to a letter urging Congress to avoid this “sequester” by passing a “balanced approach to deficit reduction that does not include further cuts to NDD programs.”

NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates Urged to Join this Effort

This letter is now being opened up to state and local organizations—including NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates. Consider signing on to this important effort to protect investments in mental illness research, services, and housing programs. You’ll be asked to provide your organization’s name as you want it listed on the letter, your contact name, contact e-mail and the type of organization (national, state or local). The deadline for sign-ons is June 22, 2012.
